#6: Research your programs

One year before you plan to apply, you should know the basic deal at each program, including the faculty with whom you hope to work. Having sorted through many programs to choose those that make it onto your list, you will develop a good sense of why you are not a fit for the programs you passed over; this gives you an idea of why you are a good fit for your chosen schools. Having this knowledge and confidence will help you to make a specific argument regarding why you are the ideal candidate for each program.
